Abstract

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated genetic disease that manifests itself in the skin or joints, or both. It often takes a diverse team of doctors with a wide range of experience to treat the disease. Psoriasis presents many challenges, including high prevalence, chronicity, disfigurement, disability, and associated comorbidity. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that is included within spondyloarthritis, a group of rheumatological diseases characterized by different clinical manifestations and associated comorbidities, which can compromise the quality of life of patients. Psoriasis and PsA are closely related, as both are chronic inflammatory diseases that can coexist in the same patient. Approximately 30% of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis usually precedes the onset of psoriatic arthritis, although in some cases, arthritis may appear first. This article provides a review of the characteristics of both diseases and the relationship between them.
